Finding Community: Is God Enough?

Today at church our pastor talked about community and how we need to embrace our fellow Christians across the denominations. Too many American Christians are divided by factions.

“I’m for the war.”
“I’m against the war.”

“I’m a Republican.”
“I’m a Democrat.”

“I’m an attachment parent.”
“I’m a Growing Kids parent.”

Is that what Christ wants for his children?

Our pastor challenged us to reach out to our Christian community (weirdos and all) and embrace them like family. They are family. While I understand this in concept and have reached out so many times in the past, it seems like there hasn’t been many arms extending back my way.

Our family has lived fifteen years away from family spending holiday after holiday alone. No Christian friend has called to invite us to Christmas dinner. No church member has asked us to Thanksgiving. Why is that? I used to take great offense at that. If we are a community of believers why do we isolate ourselves so much?

We haven’t really been plugged into a community for three years now, but we’re feeling the desire to reach out again. Still it’s hard. No one wants to reach out and not be embraced. Personally, I’m content with my Internet community.

But another thing my pastor mentioned today stood out. He said God created Eve because God wasn’t enough for man. WOW! I’ve been struggling with this very thing all my life. I’ve always desired the love and acceptance of man so much and prayed for God to be enough for me, but He’s not supposed to be. He didn’t design it that way.

We need community. We need each other!
